Eugénie Grandet

Samenvatting

Mr Grandet is an old niggard. He exploits his daughter Eugénie. He even appropriates her heritage. She also gets deceived by her cousin Charles. In the novel the actual main ‘character’ is Grandet’s fortune. Will the nice, innocent and naïve Eugénie survive? The novel is part of Balzac’s grand project, writing about all kinds of persons and aspects of French society in the first half of the nineteenth century. This project ‘La comédie humaine’ consists of about one hundred novels. JM
