In the 1990s, the Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho became increasingly interested in the life and work of Jaufre Rudel. This 12th century troubadour and lord of Blaye wrote songs of passionate love to a woman he vowed to never encounter, only admire from afar. When she began work on an opera about Rudel, she was put in contact with the novelist Amin Maalouf. Maalouf produced this French-language libretto.
